electoral reforms

Pakistan despite being a democratic country and following the democratic structure of advanced nations like the USA, Pakistan, and in fact, the USA also lacks key aspects of a true democracy. Pakistan has very well structured its government to balance its majorities and minorities with respect to religion, culture, and regional ethnicity but it seems way out of balance considering the economic status of its population. Pakistani population is dominated by people below poverty lines and middle class. According to statistics recorded in 2015, it is estimated only 7-8 % of the population is rich, about 61% of the population belongs to the middle class and lower middle class, whereas 23% is poorer than the national poverty line and average 8-9 % are considered poor.

Considering the statistical reports of wealth distribution in Pakistan it is clear that Pakistan is dominated by the middle class and poor people, so according to democratic rule, this populace shall be dominating politics in Pakistan, despite these facts, due to extensive monopoly, lobbying, use of influence and wealth in our political system there is no representation of these dominating classes in the government. This shortcoming makes our system incompetent to be called a democratic system in its purest sense. In a political system in which 91% of the population doesn’t get its representation, how can a system work in a way that ensures improvements and betterment of this populace?
If we want to implement a political system that is democratic in nature and is based on the representation of all classes of people residing in the country, it is of utmost importance that changes at the electoral level shall be made. those changes shall be implemented that provide equal opportunity for every resident and restricts the use of wealth, influence, and other means those to which not every individual of a populace has access.
• The party system in the elections shall be banned and the contestant shall only be allowed to compete individually with strict laws against lobbying.
• Candidate must not be allowed to raise funds or use their wealth to run extensive campaigns. Laws that restrict usage of wealth and influence shall be made at the electoral level
• A system shall be created using media and other necessary methods that host speeches of the candidate in their respective region in which they are competing before the elections. This system will help the candidate to convey their message to the populace and also help the people in deciding the candidate truly entitled to their vote. Besides, it will minimize the use of wealth in extensive rallies and election campaigns, giving complete access to every candidate on equal grounds.
Conclusion
In a political system that is ruled by the elite and does not allow every individual of its populace to compete on equal grounds, this system fails to be called a democratic system instead it’s a system that promotes oligarchy. In order to establish a true democratic system, it is necessary to provide equal opportunities on equal grounds for every candidate to compete in the election. Moreover, laws shall be made that only allow the use of resources that are accessible to every individual of the given populace only then we will be able to establish a democratic system in its true essence.
